To Feel or Not To Feel… That is the Question.

TDT_Feeling Your FeelingsThis may sound like an odd question… Are you willing to feel?

When it comes to gaining weight, over eating, binge eating, over exercising, chronic dieting and/or self sabotage there is always an underlying avoidance of feelings.
The thing about feelings is they never really go away.. they simply get displaced in the body. It isn’t until we are willing to truly feel that we will finally release them for good.
And when we truly feel we also release weight, over eating, binge eating, over exercising, chronic dieting and self sabotage.
Let me give you an example:
You see someone eating cake. You aren’t particular hungry or perhaps you aren’t even fond of cake at all. And as you watch others enjoy cake your feelings begin…
Maybe you feel deprived of the pleasure of cake.
Or you feel left out of an eating experience.
And you may even feel sad because you feel like you shouldn’t eat cake.
Whatever feeling it is it will begin to boil up and you will quickly decide: To feel or not to feel…
Not to Feel: If you are unwilling to sit in the discomfort of that feeling (and 99% of you will choose this so don’t feel bad) you will immediately distract yourself.
You will either rationalize eating the cake in some way or you will choose an entirely different distraction.. phone, TV, wine, you name it. You will find that this feeling will continue coming up every time others are enjoying cake and you may even begin to think there is something wrong with you or that you are addicted to cake.
To Feel: If you are willing to sit in the discomfort of that feeling and open yourself up for deeper feelings about the entire situation you will quickly notice that it doesn’t last all that long and you will move on with your merry day.
If you choose to feel you will notice that your reaction to other people eating cake becomes less and less charged. And eventually it goes away altogether.
Notice how else you choose to avoid feeling the discomfort….
…At the grocery store when you think about buying a cake…
…In your kitchen when you think about eating another slice of cake…
…At your friends house when they talk about how you should stop eating cake because sugar is bad for you…
It’s always the same. We either choose to feel or not to feel. When we choose to feel we get to move on and stop the insanity.
And when we choose not to feel… well we keep running around in circles… we never truly get anywhere.
It’s time to feel. There is simply no other way.
And if you need some help with that I have a big ol’ section about it in my newest program for Total Body Wellness.
If you haven’t checked this out yet, you definitely should. For $27 a month it’s simply a no brainer.
